I was scribbling a shopping list in my moleskine this morning with my favorite Pilot G-2 0.5. A bit later I went back to make an addition, and discovered that the pen wasn’t writing anymore. Closer examination revealed that the tiny ball had popped out of the tip, and a little spring-loaded wire was sticking out in its place. Strange! Alas, finding a ball that measures less than one millimeter in diameter in the carpet was utterly hopeless, not to mention the challenge of putting it back, so I gave up after about two seconds.
I grabbed another G-2, and was quite unsatisfied with how it wrote — scratchy with poor ink flow, which probably explains why that particular pen wound up in the drawer in the first place. (I have found that about one out of every four G-2s doesn’t write well.) So I was off to Staples to obtain another package of G-2s. I also grabbed a Dr. Grip while I was there.
I have just upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.0.1. The upgrade has overwritten some of the custom tweaks I added to my previous installation, so you may notice some minor differences (date format, etc). I plan on re-tweaking the .php files again, so things should return to normal soon.
The upgrade was performed with DreamHost’s Web Panel, which recently added a feature to seamlessly upgrade various installed programs, including WordPress. As I’ve said before, I’m impressed with DreamHost.
Annoyance #1: The Rich Text Editor does not appear to work correctly in Firefox:
- Manually entered <a href=”"> tags get converted to <a xhref=”">, which don’t work.
- The toolbar does not appear.
I’m used to working in HTML, so this isn’t a showstopper, but it is annoying that an available feature that I would use doesn’t work correctly in Firefox. (Note: this annoyance has been entered using the Rich Text Editor in Internet Explorer as a test.)
Annoyance #2: Posts I had marked as Private are appearing again. Update: Actually, they only appear if I’m logged in. OK, that makes sense.
Annoyance #3: I haven’t found a way so specify the size of the thumbnail generated when uploading a picture on the Write Post page.
Simply brilliant: blogger The Big Pharaoh has posted 10 Commandments to Muslims. Sample:
2.Thou shall remember that millions of Muslims in Europe have far more rights than non-Muslims in Arab/Muslim lands (for more info, contact the Christian villagers of el-Udaysaat) So quit playing the victim here. I simply don’t buy it.
4.Thou shall understand that the West gets their info on Islam not from your preaching nor from the books you translate to them but from your actions.
10.Your leaders should know that what was OK in the year 706 might not be OK in the year 2006. I won’t get upset if you changed a few things in the laws and regulations as long as you continue to profess faith in me, pray to me, fast during Ramadan, give alms, and perform Hajj if you’re capable of doing so.
A new prophet, perhaps? Now we just need it translated to Arabic!
