I just acquired a new bicycle: a Redline Conquest with some modifications (straight handlebar, etc.) to be more beginner- and commuting-friendly. My plan is to ride the bicycle to work and to the gym, because I badly need more cardio exercise.
This morning, I took the bicycle out for my first ride. I rode up a [...]

Today, while looking at one of my old posts, I discovered that RoadFly’s boards — previously a BMW-oriented site, and the home of bimmer.org — have been completely fucked up by some sort of corporate sell-out. This is quite annoying, and naturally broke the link in my old post.
After some digging through the new [...]

I was scribbling a shopping list in my moleskine this morning with my favorite Pilot G-2 0.5. A bit later I went back to make an addition, and discovered that the pen wasn’t writing anymore. Closer examination revealed that the tiny ball had popped out of the tip, and a little spring-loaded wire [...]

I recently had the realization that I write a lot. Of course, given the recent lack of substantive posting on this blog, one might guess that I haven’t been writing at my computer.
Actually, I’ve spent the last few years at work filling engineering notebooks (and occasionally writing code, too). I’ve kept notes on every bug [...]

I have discovered, the hard way, that a green scrubber can scratch the finish on my Wusthof chef’s knife.
Dammit.
Otherwise, I’m very happy with the knife so far. I just touched up the edge with a steel after washing, and we’ll see how it performs. (The edge was getting a bit dull.)

I was hit by a Chevy Malibu a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, I wasn’t seriously hurt.
The scene: Marsh St. in SLO is a 3 lane, one-way street. I’m in the left lane, about to pass a Chevy Malibu in the center lane. Without signalling, slowing, or looking, the Malibu turned left across my lane, [...]

This thread was posted by an ER doctor and motorcyclist. All of these patients suffered major injuries in motorcycle crashes that could have been prevented if they had been wearing proper riding gear: gloves, heavy boots, armored jacket, riding pants, and a full-face helmet.
Warning: the photos are graphic — and informative.

After a while, you may find that your E36’s headlight covers have become cloudy and yellowed. This is because the headlight covers are plastic, and plastic simply doesn’t last forever in the sun. Naturally, the headlight covers cannot be replaced on their own — you have to replace the entire headlight unit, for $100 per [...]

Throughout college, I drove a 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix. It was your basic 70s Detroit 2-door floatmobile, but it did have the big 455 engine. Apparently, that 455 made the car somewhat special, as only 7166 SJ-455s were built in 1975. Further, 1975 was the last year that the 455 was widely available; it was [...]

Every year, BMW puts on The Ultimate Drive, a fundraiser for breast cancer research. Take a new BMW for a test drive, and BMW donates money. Cool!
On Saturday, June 11, The Ultimate Drive came to Coast BMW Nissan in San Luis Obispo, and I took the opportunity to test-drive three BMWs: the 2005 325Ci convertable, [...]
